Ugly ducklings

The end of winter was a glum time here at Burrumboot, and not just because of the miserable weather at home, contrasting with our glorious European summer holidaywinefest... A fall from a horse wrecked this winemaker's knee, and so I made sure that while I was confined to the couch for what seemed like a lifetime, everyone in my immediate ( and further!) vicinity knew about my misery ... After all, a problem shared is a problem halved, right? Thank goodness for The Man Of My Dreams, and Bella the Saint Bernard Puppy. In truly Saintly fashion, she nursed me faithfully, and provided hours of entertainment ( and hours, and hours... Very boring on the couch!) You can only watch so many episodes of Breaking Bad a day...

My general malaise was lifted slightly by the news that our 2009 Marsanne-Viognier had received 5 stars and Best In Category by Winestate. I have been drinking this wine this year, a wine which, I must confess, I had, in the past, treated like a monster child and kept it pretty much locked away over much of its life... However, like many ugly ducklings, it had found its way to becoming a beautiful swan (really? This metaphor may be overreaching itself!) and I had been enjoying it more and more.

The news that this same wine had gone on to be a finalist in Wine Of the Year put a lot more spring in my step ( well, spring in my crutches, but anyway, on with the metaphor), and now, we are quietly excited by the possibility that the little grub may just have become a beautiful butterfly... We will just have to wait for the WOTY awards in November! Watch this space...
